The dispute involving the non-payment of employees of LIAT represented by our

Union here in Grenada continues.

The dispute came to a head during the carnival season August 2011 and saw the intervention of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, in his capacity as a shareholder government and Prime Minister Tillman Thomas of Grenada, in addition to two (2) Ministers of Labour in Grenada, namely the Hon. Karl Hood and the Hon. Glynis Roberts.

Todate, the issues remains unresolved and has the real potential of another explosion in the coming days.

Prime Minister Spencer’s recommended offer of Eastern Caribbean Dollar, Eight Hundred Thousand (XCD 800,000.00) settlement, was not accepted by the workers, who latest concessionary offer amounted to about XCD3.4 million dollars.

GTAWU is of the opinion that this situation warrants Government’s immediate intervention as both Union and workers are frustrated and seem not able to secure a comprehensive settlement to this dispute.

At a meeting with employees and Union it was resolved:

1. That full payment of the amount approximately XCD 3.4 million must be paid by LIAT to the workers immediately; or

2. Part payment in the sum referred to in the Union’s letter of March 2, 2012 in addition to a payment plan of the balance acceptable to the Union and employees.
