Industrial Dispute Hovers at LIATS’ Grenada Operation

The dispute involving the non-payment of employees of LIAT represented by our

Union here in Grenada continues.

The dispute came to a head during the carnival season August 2011 and saw the intervention of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, in his capacity as a shareholder government and Prime Minister Tillman Thomas of Grenada, in addition to two (2) Ministers of Labour in Grenada, namely the Hon. Karl Hood and the Hon. Glynis Roberts.

Todate, the issues remains unresolved and has the real potential of another explosion in the coming days.

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union conveys fraternal greetings to all workers on this International Workers’ Day. We mark this historic occasion at a time when the economic situation in Grenada continues to be grave and the livelihood of hundreds of workers continue to fall. It is also a situation which witnesses increasing unemployment where large sections of working people have witnessed a significant depreciation in their standard of living.

GRENADA BREWERIES LOCK OUT ENDS

It is with humility the Management Committee, Union Members and in particular the workers of Grenada Breweries Ltd. represented by the Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union have instructed that I convey to you profound gratitude for your moral and material support rendered to the Union and locked-out workers of the Brewery during their sixty five (65) day ordeal.

Had it not been for your unwavering support, the majority shareholder, Ansa McAL of Trinidad and Tobago efforts to starve the workers in its attempt to achieve at best, the destruction of the productive operation of the local Brewery, thus allowing importation of lower cost products out of Trinidad or at least the removal/drastic reduction of the Profit Sharing, a benefit enjoyed by the workers for the past thirty two (32) years would have produced disastrous results.
