TAWU BELIEVES JUDGE ERRED

After almost 5 years of frustrating wait, Madam Justice Price Findlay delivered her judgement on Friday 24th, January 2014, in an appeal brought by the St. George’s University against the Award of the Justice Lyle St. Paul Arbitral Tribunal in the matter of the payment of the NIGHT DIFFERENTIAL ALLOWANCE (NDA) or SHIFT ALLOWANCE.

VICTORY FOR TAWU AND INDEPENDENCE AGENCIES WORKERS

After three (3) long years and five (5) months victory has finally come to TAWU and the Workers at Independence Agencies. Yesterday, January 14th 2014, Justice Price Findlay ruled in favour of the Union and against the former Minister of Labour, Hon. Karl Hood and among other things, awarded $5,000.00 in cost to the Union.

COMPANY BROUGHT IN THEIR ATTORNEYS

Workers will recall that, on the morning of July 14th 2010 while the Ministry of Labour were about to conduct the poll the Company Attorneys Mr. Carol Bristol turned up at the conference room at Independence Agencies and demanded that workers at CK’s Super-Valu be part of the Bargaining Unit and be allowed to vote in the poll even though those workers had never requested representation from our Union to be their Bargaining Agent.

STATEMENT FROM THE GRENADA TECHNICAL AND ALLIED WORKERS’ UNION ON THE GRENADA BOARD OF TOURISM ISSUE

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union and its members at the Grenada Board of Tourism have started a series of industrial actions to protest the manner in which the Transitional Team set up to replace the Grenada Board of Tourism (GBT) and establish the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) is proceeding.

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union made it clear and it repeats that it is not opposed to the setting up a Grenada Tourism Authority, indeed from what has been outlined as the Grenada Tourism Authority objectives our Union finds it to be loyal and if the Grenada Tourism Authority is successful we will reap the benefits from the promotion of Grenada as a good and exciting tourism destination.

The Grenada Technical and Allied Workers’ Union, founded in 1958, is a free Trade Union Body, established to defend and further the economic social interest of workers of all kinds.

 

Unions have a substantial impact on the compensation and work lives of both unionized and non-unionized workers. Unions' effect on wages, fringe benefits, total compensation, pay inequality, and workplace protections.

 

GTAWU provides a Wide Range of Services to its members.

Among these are:

- Employment security - Wide range of fringe benefits - Grievance representation - Severance compensation
- Industrial relations advocacy - Industrial relations training - Health & Accident Insurance - Pension & Retirement benefits - Legal representation in matters pertaining to industrial relations

The above list of benefits are generally negotiated and contained in instruments of a Collective Agreement. Additionally, GTAWU members are able to enjoy the protection and influence of a strong, militant and well respected national organisation which has regional and international links.

Our Union is affiliated to the Grenada Trades Union Council and through it to the Caribbean Congress of Labour. We are also affiliated to Union Network International (UNI) which affiliates 12 million workers worldwide in various sectors:
Communications, Light and Power, Postal, Electronic media; additionally, we are also affiliated to the 14 million strong International Union of Food, Hotels Restaurant Catering, Agriculture and Tobacco workers (IUF).

In fact, our General Secretary, Cde. Bert Paterson is a member of the Executive of the Regional IUF Body.
